The Department of Petroleum Engineering at the College of Engineering – University of Baghdad announced the participation of faculty member Asst. Prof. Dr. Amal Habeeb Assi in the First International Engineering Conference held in Maysan Province, southern Iraq, on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, with the presence of researchers and specialists from various Iraqi and international universities.
Dr. Assi’s participation came through a scientific research paper titled:
“Determine CCS by Utilizing Dynamic Elasticity and Poisson Ratio for Limestone.”
The study addressed the estimation of Confining Compressive Strength (CCS) based on dynamic elasticity properties derived from well logs, along with petrophysical data related to porosity, rock types, and mineral compositions, using several empirical correlations.
The research focused on leveraging P-wave and S-wave velocities to predict elasticity parameters and rock strength, especially given the challenges of obtaining direct measurements under in-situ conditions in deep formations. This contributes to improving wellbore stability during drilling operations and reducing operational risks.
This scientific contribution reflects the significant role of the College of Engineering’s faculty in presenting innovative research that supports the development of engineering knowledge and enhances academic cooperation at both the local and international levels.
